Eugene Pioneer Cemetery, founded 1872, has been a part of Eugene since before University of Oregon was established. The cemetery is the resting place of many American heroes like Louis Renninger, who received the Medal of Honor for Gallantry in the Civil War for his missions apprehending Confederate soldiers.

Six acres were added to the cemetery’s original ten in 1907. In 1963, UO architects proposed a plan to build structures that would live above the cemetery. While the plans were considered, they were not carried out.

While sports fields and school buildings surround the cemetery, it remains a green space untouched by modern architecture and not legally associated with the university, despite previous efforts.
